(The Facts)

While football fields have lines, numbers, and parameters, how many fans can say they know the exact measurements? I find that watching an intense game unfold can sometimes be more enjoyable when you understand the finer details, like the field’s dimensions! It enables you to live vicariously through the players and enhances emotions. So, how many aces is a football field?

A football field measures exactly 1.32; 100 yards or 300 feet (91.44 meters) without counting the end zones behind the goal lines, or 120 yards or 360 feet (109.7 meters) with the end zones. Goal posts come with crossbars 10 feet above the ground, 18.6 feet, and 35 feet above the crossbar.

Although traditional football fields are 1.32 acres, other types of football, like arena football, use much smaller field sizes. We’ll also compare it to other sports fields, like football, rugby, cricket, and Australian Rules Football. Lastly, we’ll cover the cost of land for creating a football field and the stadium surrounding it.

How Many Acres Is A Football Field?

It might be that you’re curious to know the size of a football field, or perhaps you’d like to come out on the winning side of a friendly bet! Regardless, there are many measurements to consider for every section of the football field, so here’s the whole story!

American football fields are 100 yards or 300 feet (91.44 meters) long between the goal lines and 53⅓ yards or 160 feet (48.8 meters) wide. End zones also extend 10 yards or 30 feet (9.144 meters) beyond the goal lines for a complete length of 120 yards (109.7 meters). Rather than authentic grass, the green, grassy landscape consists of artificial turf.

When people refer to a football field as a unit of measurement, they typically mean 100 yards or 300 feet (91.44 meters). However, because the end zones each measure 10 yards or 30 feet, the entire length of the field, which includes the end zones, is 120 yards or 360 feet (109.7 m) (9.144 meters).

If you multiply the field’s length by the width (360 x 160), you’ll get the entire football field area in square feet, 57 600 square feet. Considering that one acre is equivalent to 43 560 square feet, dividing the total size of the football field by an acre (57 600 / 43 560), we know that a football field is 1.32 acres.

A goal is also present on each end line, with a crossbar 10 feet above the ground, with goalposts 18 feet 6 inches (5.64 meters) apart, extending at least 35 feet (11 meters) above the crossbar.

Additional lines cover the width of the field at 5-yard intervals between the goal lines. Initially, these lines went across the field, giving it a gridiron-like checkerboard look. Although it gave rise to football fields acquiring the moniker gridiron, they no longer look the same.

The dimensions shown above are for football fields in the National Football League, college football, and other leagues that play conventional, outdoor 11-man football. American football versions such as nine-man or arena football often employ smaller fields with smaller end zones.

Are All Football Fields The Same Size?

There are minor variations for the hash marks and width of the uprights for the NFL, college, and high school versions.

The distance between two line hash markers creates the fundamental distinction between high school, college, and NFL fields. At each level, the amount of space between the hash marks is as follows:
